ANVIL WORK
To restore the height of the drooping face Jason chose to weld on a 1/4" thick piece of stainless steel plate. While not as hard as the face of a quality hardened anvil this new stainless steel surface would be tough and bonds well to the make-up of the anvil body. The face of this particular anvil was not that hard to begin with. Hardness can be tested by tapping the face with a hammer--the higher the tone the harder it is. It is typical for an anvil to be harder in spots along its face; particularly on the horn and near the holes. Once restored the stainless steel "added" areas sounded just 'hard' as the non added spots. The area shown here was prepped/ground to prepare for the tight fit of the stainless plate.
